On February 9, 2025, Vatle Jeanne Spain (“Jeanne” to everyone who knew her) peacefully passed from this world in her sleep, at the age of 90. Born on July 20, 1934, in Crab Creek, North Carolina, she was a beloved figure whose life bore testament to faith, family, and resilience. As the third of eight children to James Richard and Lillian Hoxit, Jeanne shared a close bond with her family. Growing up in North Carolina, Jeanne moved with her family at the tender age of 14 to the Pacific Northwest—a journey that marked the beginning of her lifelong tale of strength and adaptability.
A steadfast Christian, Jeanne's faith was both a source of strength and a guiding principle throughout her life. In 1952, she married Harold Spain, and their union spanned over three decades. Despite parting ways in 1984, the family they built together thrived and grew over the years.
Jeanne’s love for her family was immense and unwavering, encompassing her four children, daughter Phyllis Regalado (husband Armando) of Springtown, TX, daughter Cathy Nissen (husband Eric) of Windsor, CA, son Russ Spain (wife Ingrid) of Tacoma, WA, and daughter Jennifer Spain of Springtown, TX. Her role as a grandmother was equally cherished, as she showered her 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren with boundless love and affection.
In addition to the joy of family, Jeanne loved listening to and singing old time gospel music, as well as good old-fashioned country music. She loved to travel, loved Christmas, and above all, she loved to read. Her favorites were the Bible, westerns, and romance novels.
As life gently unfolded, Jeanne faced the challenges of Alzheimer’s Dementia and spent her final months under the caring watch at The Cottages of Covington Memory Care facility in Covington, Washington. Despite this challenging chapter, her spirit remained gently resonant and her faith unshaken—a testament to her enduring strength.
A celebration of Vatle Jeanne Spain's life will take place on March 8, 2025 at the Vader Assembly of God, located at 302 6th St, Vader, Washington. Viewing begins at 11am, with services to begin at noon. An interment ceremony will follow at Little Falls Cemetery, 1494 State Hwy 506, Vader, WA, at 1:30 p.m., concluding with a reception at Vader Assembly of God at 2 p.m. All are welcome! In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Jeanne touched many lives with her love and generosity, leaving behind a legacy that will be greatly and forever missed. Through trials and triumphs, she exemplified a life of faith and family. Her spirit, ever radiant and warm, continues to inspire and guide her loved ones. Although she has departed, her love and legacy will remain entwined in the hearts of those she cherished and who cherished her.
