Rodney Givens Obituary

Rodney Duane Givens, 54, of Winlock, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2024, in Seattle, WA, after a sudden illness. Born on March 24, 1970, in Centralia, Washington, Rodney was cherished as a devoted father, proud grandfather, beloved brother, and trusted friend. His life was a testament to boundless passion, unwavering dedication, and a love that resonated deeply with everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

Growing up in the picturesque Little Hanaford Valley, Rodney was inseparable from his siblings and cousins, weaving together cherished memories and mischievous adventures that would forever bond them. Rodney was an active member of the FFA and graduated from Centralia High School in 1988.

Rodney dedicated 30 years of his life as a heavy equipment operator with the Operating Engineers Union, Local #612. Most of his career was spent working for Active Construction Inc., where his hard work and commitment were recognized and respected by his peers. He was known as an expert in his field.

Beyond his professional achievements, Rodney was well-known in Western Washington for his extraordinary musical talents. He was the lead singer for Backfire Band for nearly two decades, opening for major national acts including Little Big Town, Jake Owen, David Allen Coe, Phil Vassar, and Travis Tritt. His music brought joy and connection to many musicians and fans alike. Rodney's infectious laugh and magnetic personality made everyone a friend.

Most importantly, Rodney’s heart was always with his family. He took immense pride in making memories with them and ensuring they knew the depth of his love. He would light up when given an opportunity to brag about the most recent accomplishments of his children, Kara and Jacob, or when sharing the latest funny story about his precious granddaughter, Addison. He cherished teaching her the guitar through their FaceTime lessons.

Rodney was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Juley (Teeter) Givens, and father, James “Donnie” Givens. He is survived by his children, Kara Murray of Gilbert, AZ, and Jacob (Shayla) Givens of Eureka, CA, as well as their mother, Lesa Givens of Winlock, WA. Survivors also include his granddaughter, Addison Murray of Gilbert, AZ, his loving siblings, Kelly (Dave) Albert of Chehalis, WA, and Richard (Adrienne) Givens of Cinebar, WA, best friend Tim Ugalde of Winlock, WA, and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who will forever hold him in their hearts.

The public is invited to join Rodney’s family for a potluck celebration of his life on Saturday, July 13, 2024, from 1-6 pm at the Chehalis Moose Lodge (1400 Grand Ave, Centralia, WA).

The outpouring of love and support following his passing is a true testament to the man Rodney was and the void he leaves in the lives of his community, family, and friends. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Rodney will be profoundly missed, but never forgotten.
