Mary Ann Thompson (Byrd) of Winlock passed away September 17, 2025 at the age of 88.
She was born May 7, 1937 to Tom and Vivian Byrd (Crocker) and was later joined by siblings
Jim, Sue (Rosbach) and Mike. Mary enjoyed learning and was Valedictorian of her class at
Winlock High School in 1955. After graduation she began a career in the payroll department of
Shakertown where she remained until 1975 when she stepped away to begin her second act
as full time caregiver for her beloved husband.
Mary met Rick Thompson at a dance not long after he had returned from serving his country in
the Korean War. However, Rick first caught her eye while riding his Chestnut horse in the Egg
Day parade. They married on May 11, 1957 and their union welcomed four children and lasted
until Rick’s passing in 2005. They made a great team and together pursued raising horses,
eventually building a large stable with an indoor arena. After stepping away from the horse
business, Mary focused on creating a beautiful home and garden that was more
accommodating to Rick’s wheelchair. Their home became a central hub for activities and the
couple hosted class and family reunions, neighborhood potlucks, weddings, annual pumpkin
carving events and many happy family gatherings. As much as Mary enjoyed the role of
gracious hostess, she also appreciated her VIP status at the Guadalajara Mexican restaurant in
Winlock.
Mary was dependable, curious and creative. She enjoyed reading, making stained glass art
and was an accomplished seamstress. She had a special interest in local history and was
proud of her Pacific Northwest roots. But to those who knew her best, Mary will be
remembered first as a loving and supportive wife, mother and grandmother, quick to smile and
offer encouragement. Some of her last words were, “I did the best I could”, and indeed Mary
endeavored to do her best in every situation.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband Rick, and brothers Mike and Jim. She is survived
by her sister Sue Rosbach, daughters Carrie Cox (Rusty), Rebecca Wool (Ben) and two sons,
Steve Thompson and Tom Thompson. Also grandchildren Sarah Cox, Robin Cox, Kelly Bohrer
(William), Connor Wool (Kady), Nolan Wool and Ricky Thompson, along with great-
grandchildren Samantha Lucas, Benson and Wesley Wool.
Graveside service will be held at Winlock Cemetery on Friday, September 26 at 1:30 followed
by a 2:30 church service at Christian Fellowship of Winlock at 630 Cemetery Road.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Winlock Historical Museum, P.O. Box
