John Brannan Obituary

John Alfred Brannan January 19, 1931 – February 23, 2025

John Alfred Brannan, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at his home on February 23, 2025, at the age of 94. Born to Orrin and Stella (Sherman) Brannan on January 19, 1931, John was the youngest of three children and the only boy. Growing up, he was doted upon by his two older sisters, who loved and cherished their "little brother."

John was raised by humble, hard-working parents who taught him the value of simplicity and perseverance. His early years were defined by the love of family, the joy of small-town camaraderie, and a deep appreciation for country living.

John graduated from Mossyrock High School in 1949, where he made lasting memories and lifelong friends.

His love for horses was evident early in life, and he became an accomplished pole bending competitor from 1949 to 1957. In 1953, he proudly earned the title of state champion in pole bending. Throughout his early years, he remained actively involved with his local horse-loving friends, participating in homegrown competitions and events.

In June, 1953, John married Elizabeth (Betty) Mullens. Together, they built a beautiful life with their son, Mike and daughter, Sharlee.

John's early career saw him driving a log truck before he transitioned to working for Pacific Sand and Gravel, where he eventually became a foreman. In 1969, he moved his family to Salkum, where he took on various odd jobs, including driving a school bus for the Mossyrock School District. John later began working for the county as a road supervisor.

In 1987, he and his son established Brannan Farms - a dairy farm. Because of his love of farming, he retired from his county road supervisor job in 1993.  John's love for farming was a defining aspect of his life. He took immense pride in working the land and enjoyed every moment he spent outdoors. Whether it was driving the tractor, fixing machinery, or simply being surrounded by the beauty of nature, John found true joy and fulfillment in being a farmer.

A dedicated community member, John served as a fire commissioner for the Salkum Fire Department for 32 years and as a cemetery district commissioner for many years. He was also a proud member of the Silver Creek Grange for over 25 years.

John was a cowboy at heart; known for his strength and resilience. Even in his later years, he continued to be active, only giving up his power saw at the age of 85 and his weed eater at the age of 87.

John was preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Carol Young and Lorna Anderson, wife (Betty), daughter (Suzy) and granddaughter (Rebecca). John leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his children, Mike (Kim) Brannan and Sharlee (Larry) Luben; grandchildren Season (Jayson) Jackson, Heather Brannan, Amy (Corbin) Foster, Sean (Maritza) Brannan and Shane Luben.  He is also survived by his 10 great-grandchildren; Austin, Ben, Mira, Josiah, Noah, Eli, Sadie, Massimo, Daivy and Henry.

A graveside service will be held at 11 AM at Doss Cemetery on Saturday, March 15, 2025 with a Celebration of Life at the Salkum Fire Hall at 1 PM.
