Gordon Dowell, 92, was born August 22, 1933 in Hayesville, NC. He passed away at St. John’s Hospital in Longview WA from congestive heart failure. When Gordon was a young boy, he moved to Ryderwood, WA with his father and mother (Walt and Julie) as well as 5 brothers (Wilburn, Jared, Edward, Lonnie, and Hayden). As he grew up there, he developed a love of the outdoors and eventually pursued a job that let him work outdoors. He also loved sports and participated in all the sports that the school offered.
Later he joined the Army and was stationed in Okinawa Japan. When he came home, he purchased his property in Vader WA and that is where he made his home for the rest of his life. He went to work for Weyerhaeuser and became a timber faller for them. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He worked for them until an injury left him paralyzed from the waist down. He was confined to a wheelchair but that didn’t stop him. He had a love of life that came through and he shared that with everyone around him.
He is survived by his daughter, Colleen (Terry) Stanford, his grandson, Landon (Natasha) Stanford, his nephew and caregiver, Walter (Teresa) Dowell, his brother Lonnie Dowell, with many nieces and nephews. Proceeding him in death was his father Walt, his mother Julie, brothers Hayden, Edward, Wilburn, and Jared.
A graveside service will be held at Little Falls Cemetery at 11AM on Saturday, April 18th. Everyone who knew Gordon is invited to attend. Afterwards we will have a get-together at Sahara Pizza in Winlock to remember a life well lived.
