Donald "Don" Hack Obituary

Donald William (Don) Hack,92, of Longview, WA, born to Henry and Mary (Batchelder) Hack, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2022 from complications of dementia.

Donald Hack was born in Longview, WA on March 3, 1930, and other than during his time in the Army he lived his entire life in SW Washington. As a teenager he cultivated, planted, and harvested the hay fields of neighbors using horse-drawn tools. Later he logged with horses on small timber acreage before working for contract loggers. Don proved himself to be a valuable worker while logging because he could accomplish any task he was given, from basic landing jobs and machine operations to skilled falling and bucking trees.

After a back injury he pursued his passion of photography. Travelling to various places west of the Rocky Mountains with his family he preferred the SW Washington area, especially around Mt. Rainier and Mount St. Helens, where the family spent time every year hiking, camping, canoeing and fishing. Over the years Don and Alice took thousands of pictures, documenting flora, fauna, geology, rivers, mountains, family, and much more. That led to spending thousands of hours printing photos in their own darkroom, then precisely cataloging each photo. Working in the darkroom with Alice was an activity Don enjoyed into his 90s. For more mental stimulus Don chose to collect fish data for Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife by fly fishing.

During his time in the US Army, he became skilled at driving and operating a wrecker while serving in Texas and Japan during the Korean War.

Don felt it was important to believe and live a life faithful to God. He was active in Lutheran churches until health reasons made it difficult to attend.

Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice (Brunner) Hack, along with their 3 children and their spouses, Kathy (and Pat) Carlman, Mark (and Arlene) Hack, and Jesse (and Jeanie) Hack. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren along with other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Richard, George and Lester Hack.
