Daniel Clare Obituary

Daniel Edward Clare

Daniel Edward Clare, age 85, passed on June 3, 2022. He was born in Sacramento, CA to Daniel Franklin Clare and Eleanor Gilmore Clare on May 4, 1937.

Dan grew up in Glendale, OR, and graduated from Glendale High School in 1955. Two sisters survive him, Pat LaPrath, Lodi CA, and Nancy Branum (Clint), Dallas, OR. His family had a long history with lumber and owned Clare Lumber Co. His life was spent around timber, sawmills and retail lumber yards.

After two years in the Army (1955-57) and always good with numbers, he graduated from Sacramento State in 1962 with an BA in Accounting. He spent his entire career within the timber and lumber industries. He worked for Brand S, Seneca, and was a partner in Caffall Brothers Forest Products for over 20 years. In 1995 he realized a lifelong dream and purchased his own Western Red Cedar fencing sawmill, Butteville Lumber Co in Onalaska, WA. Working together with his son-in-law, Don Rouse, the sawmill ran 22 years and provided employment and learning opportunities for many. It closed in 2017.

While stationed on Vashon Island during his Army years, he met Virginia Swift. The two were married for 40 years and had three children: Casey Rouse (Don) of Winlock WA, Daniel A Clare (Lynn) of Vashon, WA, and Douglas F Clare (Talia) of McKinleyville, CA. These three gave him seven grandchildren: Emery H Rouse, Cody F Rouse (Stephanie) and Abigail Clare Spears (Ryan), Kathleen and Kelly Costello, Trula, and Dash Clare, and two grandbabies in heaven, Sunny and Robin Clare. He had one great grandson, Aiden Rouse.

In 2021 Dan married Ellen Sharbono.

Dan enjoyed water and was happiest when he was fishing with his young family on Battle Ground Lake or white water rafting with friends and family on the Rouge River. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports. He loved his dogs and was seldom without one.

Dan was a character and had a lasting effect on everyone who knew him.
