Joseph Frank Marty, 78, of Toledo, passed away January 12, 2018. He was born December 5, 1939 in Forest, WA to Rupert and Margaret (Koehle) Marty. Joe was a life-long resident of Toledo, except for his two years of military service in the Army.
Joe was born into a large family and immediately learned the value of hard work and his love of fishing. He worked with his dad delivering firewood as a teenager would fish with him before school. Joe said that he would walk slow to school until he was late and then go back to fishing.
Joe worked as a school bus driver and drove log truck before finding his true passion of building houses. He said that he was always happy to complete a home and hand the keys to the owner and seeing the smile on their face.
Joe served in the US Army from 1962 to 1964, spending much of that time in Europe. He was able to travel to Switzerland while there and meet the families of his parents. He spoke often of his travels around Switzerland.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Joe loved being outside and was always involved in helping someone land a fish or drag an animal up the hill. He loved hunting for many years with the Red Dogs and had many stories to tell.
Joe was very proud of his Swiss heritage. A great dancer, he boasted of dancing until the sun came up at the Swiss festivals. He was a life time member of the Lewis-Pacific Swiss Society.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Rupert and Margaret; brother, Bobby; son, Shawn; and wives, Noni and Yvonne.
He is survived by many who loved him, including his children; Dan, Todd (Alicia), Valerie (Ken), Angela (Glen), Melissa, and James. His brothers and sisters were his greatest pride and they included; Carnie (Ward) Cornell, Betty (Scoot) Boone, John (Carol), Tom (Sherrie), Susie (Dave) Berner, Frank (JoAnne), Eileen (Corky) Gower, Peggy (Mel) Peel, and Don (Lisa). His grandchildren were Julia, Austin, McKenzie, Fischer, Kaitlyn, Emilee, Tyler, and Blaine. He also had numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-grandchildren who all loved him dearly.
Joe did not want a service to be remembered by. If you would like to remember him, stop by the Cowlitz River and say hi…that is where he will be. 4pm was his happy hour. Join his family for a toast, any day.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be made in his name to the Toledo Fire Department, PO Box 309, Toledo, WA 98591. Arrangements are under the care of Cattermole Funeral Home, Winlock.
