Helen Petrie Obituary

Helen W. Petrie, a 65 year resident of Chehalis, passed away Nov. 18, 2018, at the age of 101 and a half. She was born May 8, 1917, in Winlock, Wash., the daughter of Andrew and Mathilda Schlittler.She attended schools in Winlock. In 1937, she married Herbert F. Petrie, also of Winlock. They were married for 72 years before Herb’s passing in 2009. Between 1937 and 1942, they lived in Winlock, Aberdeen and Olympia before moving to Chehalis.Helen led a very active life until two weeks prior to her death. In addition to being a wife and mother, she and Herb bought, remodeled and sold property in Chehalis, Centralia and Raymond. She was involved with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. At age 100, she was a 65 year member of the Rebekah Lodge and was surprised at her 100 year birthday party with her 65 year jewel. She was noble grand twice, as well as holding other offices in the Chehalis Order and after the Chehalis Order closed, the Napavine Order. She also served as district past president. For 20 years, she assisted Hope Grange members setting up displays in the Home Economics building at the Lewis County Fair. For 30 years, she served as secretary of a bowling league and was a member and president of two garden clubs. Her hobbies included gardening, bowling, pinochle and bunco. Helen and Herb were longtime members of the Chehalis Westminster Presbyterian Church.Helen passed away in Keizer, Ore., where she moved at the time of Herbs passing to be near her children. She is survived by her son, Gary (Aileen) Petrie of Salem, Ore.; daughter, Carol Petrie Dornfeld, of Keizer, Ore.; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Ed and Fred Schlitter; and an infant grandson.At the request of Helen, a private graveside service for extended family and close friends will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 30, 2018, at Winlock Cemetery and will be officiated by Ralph Carr, the family’s long-time pastor from Westminster Presbyterian Church.
