Betty Hack Obituary

There are no adequate words to express the loss of Betty, yet we will treasure her life lessons, love and friendship forever. Mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, Betty Lou Hack passed away April 6, 2018, in Olympia, Wash., due to a head injury from a fall. Betty was born in Vader, Wash., Aug. 9, 1931, to Charles and Myrtle Meade. She had an older brother, George, who preceded her in death in 1973. After the passing of Betty’s dad, Myrtle married Thomas Prim and he quickly became the father that Betty adored. She grew up in Vader and graduated from Ryderwood High School. Betty married her first husband, Peter Rodriguez, in 1949, they welcomed their four children, David Rodriguez (Vickie), Irene Richey (Jim), Thomas Rodriguez and Cindie Lou Jackson (Jerry). In 1965, Betty reunited with a grade school classmate, George Hack. They fell in love and married in 1966, adding his three children to the family, Curtis Hack, Colleen Hack (Hal) and Carol Holtz (Cliff). Through the years, she had great diversity in her career and life. When she was little, her parents owned a grocery and mercantile in Vader, Wash. After high school, she worked on the saltine cracker production line at the Nabisco Bakery in Seattle, Wash. In the 1950s, she worked as a telephone operator and at the Mercantile Grocery Store in Ryderwood, Wash. In the 1960s, she worked as a school bus driver for the Lewis County Junior Academy and as a farm worker on chicken farms owned by the late Dr. Alfred and Betty Twiss of Chehalis. Later in the 1960s, Betty attended South Puget Sound Community College and graduated as a medical assistant. She worked at Doctors Medical Group/Steck Clinic from 1965 to 1981. In 1977, the love of her life, George passed away from a logging accident and she once again found herself alone. After George’s death, Betty worked for Dr. Kevin Connolly, Neurologist, Olympia, her last job before her official retirement. Retirement was short-lived however and she worked for her daughter, Cindie Jackson, at Billie’s Unique Apparel, Centralia, Wash., from 1986 to 1990, and later in Cindie’s insurance office, Chehalis, Wash. After the closure of the insurance office, she worked at Katie’s Candies, Chehalis, Wash., where she retired for the second and final time. Betty’s hobbies included flower gardening, shopping, and doll collecting; she was a member of the local Doll Club for many years and eagerly attended many doll related functions in Washington and Oregon. Betty was involved in philanthropic activities for area schools, women’s shelters and nursing homes thru her membership in a service organization; The Rebekah’s. She developed many new and lasting friendships while active in these organizations. Betty gave her heart to her creator, was baptized and for most of her adult life and was a member of the Winlock Seventh-day Adventist Church. Betty had nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren spread throughout Washington, Kentucky, California and the Solomon Islands. When the grandchildren were little, those that lived close enough spent many special hours with Grandma when she took them on trips to the beach and everyplace fun she could think to take them. Betty loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spent time with them whenever she could. She is survived by six of her seven children; eight of her nine grandchildren; all nine of her great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law; and many cousins, numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Betty always had at least one dog to keep her company and at the time of her passing, she had Cassie, a Maltese and Abby, a Yorkshire Terrier. A special thanks to Dr. Corey White and the other doctors and staff at Providence St. Peter Hospital ICU, Olympia, Wash., and to loving friends and family who helped us through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Chehalis-Centralia Veterinary Hospital or the Human Response Network, c/o Betty Hack Estate, 953 South Military Road, Winlock, WA 98596. A memorial will be held Saturday, May 19, 2018, at 3 p.m., at the Winlock Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2660 Old Hwy 603, Winlock, Wash.
